Healthy skin and blood circulation
How circulation affects the skin.

Skin has 2 layers, the epidermis and the dermis. The skin you touch is the epidermis. Under the epidermis is another layer of skin called the dermis. This layer is filled with blood vessels. It is this blood supply that keeps your skin healthy. The blood brings oxygen all the cells of your body including your skin. Your body cells eat oxygen and eliminates other stuff that the body takes away in the blood. So there is kind of a trade--the blood gives the cells food (oxygen and nutrients) and takes away the cells' garbage (carbon dioxide, and other stuff)

It makes sense to keep the blood and the blood vessels(the pipes the blood runs through) as healthy as possible. Here are some suggestions:

1. Smoking makes your blood vessels smaller. Because of this, blood flow is cut down to your skin. Remember your blood gives your skin oxygen and food and takes away the unhealthy byproducts. Just don't start smoking, or stop. There are other health benefits from not smoking--but healthy skin is the most visible reason. There seem to be treatments that use hypnotism that work.

Talk to your health provider about this, and what will help to prevent long term damage to your skin caused by this condition. Ask about how exercise, nutrition, supplements, and skin care programs can improve your health.

2. Anemia is also hard on skin. Anemia means that the blood has a reduction of red blood cells. The red blood cells are the cells in the blood that carry oxygen to the cells of the body--this includes the skin. This condition may mean that your skin cells might become unhealthy or die. Anemia needs to be treated.

Talk to your health provider about what will help to prevent long damage to your skin caused by this condition. Ask about how exercise, nuitrition, supplements, and skin care programs can improve your health.

3. The narrowing of the blood vessels--which is called Vascular Disease--can be caused by diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. With this narrowing of the blood vessels there is decreased blood flow to skin. Again, if you have this problem, see your health professional.

4. Edema is a condition in which the body swells because of fluid that collects in the cells. This condition usually occurs in locations in the body that are below the heart--arms and legs. A common recommendation is to elevate the swollen part above the heart several time during the day.
